Plans (nefarious & otherwise)

You’re too quick! Just working on a new graphic and it was done when I came back. Ach tá {{Stub}} ann fós! Looks like you still have a couple of redirects to do. ☸ Moilleadóir 04:43, 22 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Y Déanta - I like the new image (síol, obviously, being a 'seed' :) ). Like the way your talk page is taking shape :) You might want to take a look at w:en:User talk:Alison, as that one has moved on a bit. Also, there's a new archive look taking shape at w:en:User:Alison/sandbox. Steal whatever takes your fancy! - Alison 06:09, 22 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, but I probably need to get back to some actual work sometime! :) I’ll have a look once I get all the bits of the version together. Suffering from multi-tab overload at the moment! ☸ Moilleadóir 06:15, 22 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

And so it begins...

Fáilte romhat ar ais, a chara. Ghabh mo leithscéal, ach tá mo chuid Gaeilge go h-ainnis! Saghas Gaeilge árdtest ata sé, ach críochnaigh me an teist sin i 1986 :) Ar aon nós, tá tú anseo anois. Agus brón ach níl aon moltaí againn.

I'm absolutely delighted to have you on here. Feel free to get stuck in at whatever you like, really - it's a mess! The wikt has been derelict for a long time & I found it vandalised and in a mess. The one sysop has been gone over a year so I requested a temporary bit and got to work. A lot of MediaWiki has been done now & all the Gaeilge is starting to creep into the interface. Looks awesome.

It's a labour of love for me. I really think we should have a thriving Irish Wiktionary and I'm more than willing to put in some donkey work. It would really compliment Vicipéid.

Ar aon nós, fáilte ar ais!! :) - Alison 08:02, 15 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC) (staying kinda bilingual for others around, ar an am seo)Reply

Tá orm dul abhaile anois, as an "day-job". Leath uair tar éis a h-aon anseo i gCaileafórnia :) Amárach! - Alison 08:16, 15 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
It looks nice! I had wondered about the categories too. The genitive is a problem. I suppose you could generate templates like {{ga*}} for each language to contain the genitive but that's a lot of work. I simply prefixed the ISO code, so now it is category:ga:Ainmfhocal. Not ideal perhaps but it works and has the advantage that the cat's name remains short. Otherwise it gets pretty cluttered at the bottom of the page after a while. Whatever we decide we better decide it fast because changing our mind now is not too hard with as few pages as we have now. I pretty much did the whole category thing in one evening. If you want it differently that can still be done but not that easily once more words come in.
I appreciate that you ask mt opinion, but I do feel this is your wikti. I am just a gaelophile sympathizer in recognition of the many pleasant hours spent on playing your wonderful music on my flute and penny whistle. Oh, I do have a serious complaint about you guys: when are you going to make it even remotely possible to learn that language of yours? Most books cover the considerable pronunciation problem in a few badly written pages that depart from the assumption that I must be some dumbwit Sassenach who can't say a proper dh anyway. So why bother? On the other end of the spectrum is this primsleur stuff that teaches me that sorry is /gɑməƚɛʃ'kɰel/ or so but I have no clue what that looks like in writing... Can we please have both IPA and audio and proper orthography here? Le do thoil, pretty please? I looked at commons and was proud and happy to see plenty of Dutch audio. Gaelic? Zero comma zero... Tsk. Jcwf 17:35, 16 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
One more thing: if you make the header templates Gaelic only, or worse if you replace the templates by headers-in-Gaelic you make this site one for Gaelic speakers only. The Dutch wikti has fought this tendency from the start and advocated a set of international header templates like -adj- etc. simply because that allows people like Haukela (a Fin who does not speak Dutch) to add lemma's in Finnish on the Dutch wikti. Unfortunately the English wikti has very soon abandoned this way of thinking (the french has not interestingly) in favor of: everybody's gotta know English! Maybe they can afford to be so rude and arrogant but then can you Gaels?

It’s an important point and one that needs discussion. I think it should happen more publicly though as discussions that jump back and forth between user talk pages are hard to find and they also give me a headache! So I suggest the Leagan amach na n-iontrálacha / Entry layout talk page is the place. ☸ Moilleadóir 04:09, 17 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Good plan & I'll see you both over there. This kind of long-term rulesetting dialog has to happen really early one, lest we get too entrenced in one particular way of doing things. I have to warn both of you that I'm crap at this stuff (I'm more Wikipedia than Wiktionary) but I'll see what I can do - Alison 04:13, 17 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Template redirs

[ as mo phlé úsáideora ]

Template redirects should be just fine. MediaWiki is peppered with internal redirs already (look at how so many of the intrinsic ones are redirs to the Irish phrases). Server performance is minimal. I've already done it with {{scrios}} and it's Béarla equivalent {{delete}} as it's been requested already. It works just fine :) If some editors are Béarla-only, I'm utterly fine with accommodating them with redirs so long as the base templates make a reasonable effort to remain as Gaeilge. We can put it to the community later if needs be (soon as there is one!). BTW - the speedy-delete system is running well now, so mark anything you like now as {{scrios|Ní maith liom é}} and I'll be able to hit it easily - Alison 03:58, 19 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Minor thing, though. For template redirects, the syntax needs to be like this. I fixed two - Alison 07:59, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Duh. Thanks Alison! Bought decaf coffee yesterday by mistake - I’ll blame that! ☸ Moilleadóir 08:30, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Heh! Know that feeling, too :) - Alison 15:31, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Quick request

Could you possibly post a message on Halla Baile or somewhere similar ar an Vicípéid Gaeilge, by any chance? You know the place over there a lot better than I do. Just to inform people that we're running here now and maybe get a few more victims volunteers (*ahem*) on board? I left a message with Guliolopez a few days back but he didn't bite :) I've already informed the crowd on w:en:WP:IWNB a few weeks back - Alison 05:59, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Oh, and if you notice my Irish is dreadful, feel free to correct it with impunity. I know I'm out of practice and I need the pointers! - Alison 22:08, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request for adminship

Hi there. I'm not one to canvass (and it's frowned upon on en.wp!) but I've just applied for adminship on here. As you're a regular editor here and know my history, I thought I should point it out to give you fair chance to voice your opinion. Le meas - Alison 20:12, 20 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bots, bots, bots!!

Good call. I'm unsure as I've seen more than one term, róbó vs. robáit, etc. I'll clean up the redirects in a second. One of them is in MediaWiki ... - Alison 05:41, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Y Déanta cheana. Except for the MediaWiki one. ☸ Moilleadóir 05:49, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Y Déanta cheana féin (new templates getting a workout). Need to update some templates, is all. Singular is róbó, ceart? - Alison 05:56, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Can you mark the redirs with {{scrios}} and I'll hit them all? I'm guessing you caught all the links, from the looks of things - Alison 05:57, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
Afraid you’ve lost me here...what do you want me to mark exactly? There were two redirs Vicífhoclóir:Bot policy and VF:BOT which I’ve changed already. ☸ Moilleadóir 06:10, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply
(ec) Gach rud glanta suas anois. 'sokay - we're sorted now - Alison 06:11, 21 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ní ceart an t-alt a chur in ainm iontrála

Oops! I'm learning, I'm learning! Gramadach is not one of my strong points. :) - Alison 03:35, 30 Meán Fómhair 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sorry: I copied it directly from w:an Bhruiséil
